Employment Opportunities
There are many types of oil employment.  Here are just a few.  There are always many Entry Level positions available.

Work Conditions
Many oil rig accommodation facilities meet hotel standards. In most cases, your expenses while you are on board the oil rig - such as board, food and laundry - are paid for by your employer. In most cases, the cost of traveling to and from the oil rig is also covered by your employer. Working aboard an oil or gas rig is hard work, But the pay is great.

Salary
Your salary depends on the job you are hired for, amount of hours you work, the company that is hiring you, project and location, and other factors.


  • Catering - Submit Resume for Distribution
    The following positions do not get as much assistance as would be the standard in the hotel, restaurant or forces. Much more cleaning up etc. would be expected than usual.

Camp Boss- is in charge of the catering department.

Cook- responsible for cooking the meals.

Steward/ess -The Steward or Stewardess' main job is to assist in the kitchen, clean the accommodations and do the laundry.

Night Baker- responsible for doing the nightly baking


  • Control Room Personnel - Submit Resume for Distribution
    In the control room of Semi-Submersibles the stability of the rig is controlled. Liquid transfers like diesel and fresh water from supply boats to the rig storage tanks are also controlled here. It is also the control area when the vessel is moving location.

Barge Engineer - is in charge of control room operations his next in command is the Control Room Operator.

Control Room Operator (CRO) - next in command.

Assistant Control Room Operator (ACRO) - Entry level personnel.


Crane Operator - responsible for crane operations on the rig. Supervisor to assistant and the Roustabouts.

Assistant Crane Operator - An experienced Roustabout, also qualified to operate the cranes. Will often be next in line for promotion to Crane Operator.

Maintenance Forman - oversees Maintenance Roustabouts.

Maintenance Roustabout - main duties include general upkeep and cleansing of deck area of rig. Also painting.

Roustabout - main duties include guiding the crane as loads are moved about the deck, supplying equipment to the rig floor, maintain pipe deck and main deck cleanliness. Assist Roughnecks on the drill floor when required. This usually only happens when the Roughnecks are too busy to get a meal break. The Roustabout will get his meal, then go to the drill floor allowing one Roughneck to get his break. Then each Roughneck swaps out until everyone has eaten.

 

Driller - Very high level of responsibility, in charge of everything happening on/above the rig floor. Operates the sea bed drilling equipment.
Assistant Driller- responsible for many tasks these vary depending on particular drilling operation being carried out. Direct supervisor for Dereckman, Pumpman & Roughnecks.

Roughneck - is responsible for the operation of equipment and machines as required by the driller. Works on the rig floor in teams of 3. While drilling, one Roughneck is present in the mud process room at all times. Takes mud weights, ensures shakers & machines are working properly

Dereckman - responsible for the maintenance and smooth operation of the mud pumps, mud holding pits & other machines in the mud pump room. Assists the Roughnecks when very busy on drill floor.

Pumpman (Assistant Dereckman) Assistant to the Dereckman in the mud pump room. Works on the drill floor as a Roughneck when required.


  • Electrical Department - Submit Resume for Distribution
    The following positions are responsible for the maintenance and repair of all the electrical equipment on board the rig. Rarely, they may have to work longer than the normal shift. They can be called out at any time during their time off to fix a major problem. There may be times when they will have to work at height, in a work basket, hoisted by crane or air winch. On occasion they may have to wear a harness and get hoisted by air winch.

  • Mechanical Department - Submit Resume for Distribution
    The following positions are responsible for the diesel generators and all other mechanical operations on the rig including the rig floor equipment. Rarely, they may have to work longer than the normal shift. They can be called out at any time during their time off to fix a major problem. There may be times when they will have to work at height, in a work basket, hoisted by crane or air winch. On occasion they may have to wear a harness and get hoisted by air winch.

Company Man/Woman- Tthe oil companies on board representative employee. Not employed by the drilling company operating the rig. On a drilling rig an oil company employee works with the drilling company to supervise its interests, helping the strategy for drilling the well.
Offshore Installation Manager (OIM) Often worked their way up through the drill crew ranks. In overall charge of the rig. Sometimes called "Man In Charge" (MIC).
Toolpusher - An experienced driller. Works in the rig offices and the rig floor. Has responsibilities on the main deck



Subsea Engineer - mainly responsible for the Blow Out Preventer unit and the motion compensation system of the rig..

Assistant Subsea Engineer - sometimes promoted from Roughnecks. More usually from a mechanical background.



Welder - carry out all day to day repairs and building of new metalwork. Are always busy. When there is a big project often a squad of welders are hired. Some welders move from rig to rig wherever their company has a contract.

Materials man/woman (Storeman/woman) Responsible for the maintenance of the stores, stock ordering and receiving. Must be computer literate.

Medic - responsible for the upkeep of the Sick Bay and the medical stocks & rig medical records. Issues medicines like a pharmacist. Has a high level of medical training. May be former nurses. May also be the Rig Safety & Training Coordinator (RSTC).


Mud engineer - in charge of the drilling fluids being used. They will likely have a degree in chemistry and good knowledge of drilling procedures.

Painter - Given his work from the Barge Engineer, the Painter is responsible for the rig painting program. Often working at heights with scaffolding safety harness and or work basket hoisted by the crane. Usually builds his own scaffolding.

Radio Operator - a vital job, may be the easiest job.

Rig Safety & Training Coordinator (RSTC) - responsible for full knowledge of the offshore safety laws and company policies. Must be a good communicator, organizer and posses computer skills.

Scaffolders - responsible for different installations depending on where their company has work
